The Disney Plus series She-Hulk has taken an interesting turn with its fourth-wall breaking and meta approach to comedy. In fact, She-Hulk actually used real Instagram comments to fuel the on-screen backlash against the titular superhero. It’s certainly a unique way to demonstrate the misogynistic comments made towards the character when the series was first announced in 2019.
As you can see below, one such comment made on Instagram blamed the “#MeToo movement” for getting rid of all the “male heroes.” Of course, She-Hulk has already been a part of Marvel’s canon via comic book and animated series appearances for many years before the #MeToo movement ever took place.
Nevertheless, the comment was still reused for the She-Hulk Disney Plus series during its third episode when the media reacts to She-Hulk in a montage sequence.
Here’s the Instagram comment reused for the She-Hulk in-universe backlash as it was pointed out via @shehulkupdates on Twitter:
It seems like Marvel took some inspiration. In 2019 when Marvel announced She-Hulk the comments were spammed with outraged men. Even some of the exact words shown in the video. “So we have a metoo movement now and all the male heroes are gone?” #SheHulk #SheHulkAttorneyAtLaw pic.twitter.com/YQoJGcnAP6

At a time when the series continues to generate backlash online, it’s certainly a very timely and interesting way to reuse such complaints. Perhaps it goes to show just how toxic some fans are – and that they can often be rendered as a caricature because of it. In the meantime, the Disney Plus series is still airing, and it’s acquired plenty of fans in the weeks since it debuted.
Tatiana Maslany leads the cast of She-Hulk as Jennifer Walters aka the titular character. She’ll be joined by Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner aka Hulk. Tim Roth also reprises his role as Emil Blonsky aka the Abomination from 2008’s The Incredible Hulk. Ginger Gonzaga, Renée Elise Goldsberry, and the aforementioned Jameela Jamil also star.
The new Marvel Cinematic Universe series She-Hulk: Attorney at Law is currently available to stream on Disney Plus. Fans can stay tuned to ScreenGeek for additional updates regarding She-Hulk: Attorney at Law as we have them.
