The world of copyright law is a fascinating and complicated thing. While it’s put some franchises – like the Friday the 13th film series – in a weird legal limbo, it’s allowed other franchises to prosper. For example, there’s an endless supply of Dracula films – all because the character is now considered to be in the public domain. Now it looks like Winnie the Pooh will be the next literary icon to make the step into the public domain landscape. And, as a result, we’ll soon be getting a bloody and violent take on the character with Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey. This is evident in the newly-released Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey trailer which you can view below.
While there are certain reminders of where this film came from – such as an eerie sign that reads “100 Acre Woods” – this is a completely new experience.
For example, Winnie the Pooh and his best friend Piglet has been transformed into disturbing slasher villain caricatures. They’re no longer the cute and cuddly storybook characters you remember from your childhood. They’ve become something much worse. And they’re hungry.
Here’s the brand-new trailer for Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey. As you can imagine, the footage proves this upcoming film will be quite a departure from the iconic characters:
Rhys Frake-Waterfield both wrote and directed the horror film from a screenplay inspired from the public domain characters created by A.A. Milne.
The cast of Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey includes Amber Doig-Thorne, Maria Taylor, and Danielle Scott.
Although there isn’t a specific release date given, the film is expected to be released by ITN Studios sometime later this year. The release will include both DVD and VOD formats worldwide. As such, fans can stay tuned to ScreenGeek for any additional updates as we have them. This will certainly be an interesting project to keep an eye on.
