Robert Downey Jr. became synonymous with the character Iron Man after appearing as the iconic comic book character throughout the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Now, following his to-date final appearance as the character in Avengers: Endgame, he was set to have a role in the upcoming movie All-Star Weekend. However, it looks like that the Robert Downey Jr. film was deemed “too uncomfortable” to be released.
This was confirmed by writer, director, and actor Jamie Foxx while speaking with CinemaBlend. It seems that there is uncomfortable material in the film with Robert Downey Jr. that just makes it too sensitive for the current climate.
As such, it’s unknown when the film be released.
As he explained:
“It’s been tough with the lay of the land when it comes to comedy,” Foxx stated. “We’re trying to break open the sensitive corners where people go back to laughing again… We hope to keep them laughing and run them right into ‘All-Star Weekend’ because we were definitely going for it.”
The basis of the film follows Jamie Foxx’s character alongside a character played by Jeremy Piven. They’re a pair of best friends attempting to attend the annual NBA event. Unfortunately, they continually become sidetracked with a number of different characters. This includes Robert Downey Jr.’s character who is actually supposed to be a Mexican. This role was compared to the time Robert Downey Jr. played a black man in Tropic Thunder. Furthermore, Jamie Foxx allegedly plays similar additional roles as well, including what’s said to be a white racist cop. As such, it seems like this is just not the right time for the film to be released.
All-Star Weekend was directed by Jamie Foxx from a screenplay he wrote with Audra Kinkead.
Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for any additional updates for All-Star Weekend as we have them. For now, however, it looks like the film will remain shelved indefinitely.
