In 2013, Jeff Bridges and Ryan Reynolds starred in a comic book adaptation titled R.I.P.D.. And, although the film was not at all the success Universal Pictures was hoping for, it looks like we’ll still be getting a sequel nearly a decade later. Yes, it’s been revealed that a sequel titled R.I.P.D.: Rise of the Damned is on the way. Furthermore, it appears that the film has already been shot, as it’s just received a PG-13 rating from the MPAA.
The MPAA rating was located on this week’s ratings bulletin. This is the first time that the sequel has been revealed in any way – so it’s quite surprising to see it come out of the blue. Now that the film is both shot and rated, however, it seems more than likely that more details will be on the way soon. After nine years of silence, this is certainly an interesting move by Universal Pictures Home Entertainment.
The description for the rating includes the kind of content you’d expect from a sequel to R.I.P.D.. The film was described as follows:
“Rated PG-13 for sequences of violence, language, disturbing images and some crude/sexual references.”
Without any further details, it’s unknown how this upcoming sequel will fit in with the original film (if at all.) After all, Universal Pictures Home Entertainment has released more than a few straight-to-video sequels with no continuity with their predecessors.
Then again, they’ve also done a great job with sequels like Curse of Chucky that fit in just fine with previous films, so perhaps we’ll be even more surprised. As such, fans can stay tuned to ScreenGeek for any further updates on this R.I.P.D. sequel titled R.I.P.D.: Rise of the Damned as we have them. In the meantime, at least we know what the film will be rated.
