Warner Bros surprised everyone when they announced that the DCEU film Batgirl was completely cancelled. The film was initially shot for a release on HBO Max and later reported to have been considered for a theatrical release. Now it appears that neither release will be happening as the film has been scrapped altogether. It’s a move that no one expected, as Warner Bros is now eager to restrict their DCEU slate to blockbuster-scale films only. Now that Warner Bros has axed this particular film, however, many fans suspect that something similar could happen to the release of The Flash.
After all, star Ezra Miller has been the subject of controversy for quite some time now. While Warner Bros has remained adamant about their plans to release the film, their decision to kill Batgirl could change all of that.
In fact, even Variety has suggested that Warner Bros is uncertain regarding their plans for the upcoming Flash film.
As they’ve stated:
“The decision still comes as a shock, as studios almost never shelve productions outright, preferring to get at least some return on their investment. It also comes as Warner Bros. is still contending with what to do about “The Flash,” a DC adaptation created — and budgeted — specifically for theatrical release in 2023.”
Furthermore, they point out that star Ezra Miller is the main reason for their concerns:
“The film has been utterly hamstrung by repeated allegations of abuse and misconduct by its star, Ezra Miller.”
With that in mind, there shouldn’t any other problems regarding the project. At least, no other problems regarding “blockbuster-scale.” The Flash was intended to be released in theaters from the very beginning, and it has the budget to emphasize such a debut as well. It’ll be interesting to see, then, what kind of plans Warner Bros will end up using for the film.
The DCEU superhero film The Flash was directed by Andy Muschietti from a screenplay written by Christina Hodson. The story for the film was penned by John Francis Daley, Jonathan Goldstein, and Joby Harold.
The cast includes Ezra Miller, Ron Livingston, Michael Keaton, Kiersey Clemons, Michael Shannon, Antje Traue, Sasha Calle, and Ben Affleck. A number of other cast members are also expected to be attached to the project.
The release date for the film is currently scheduled for June 23, 2023. Of course, given current circumstances, that could soon be subject to change. As such, fans can stay tuned to ScreenGeek for additional updates regarding the release of The Flash as we have them.
