Many pop culture fans have been looking forward to the newly-released film The Gray Man for a number of reasons. Aside from its highly-acclaimed Marvel Cinematic Universe directors, massive budget, and incredible cast, the film is also based on a popular 2009 novel from author Mark Greaney. This particular book was the first in a large series of novels that a number of filmmakers have attempted to adapt in the past. With each failed attempt, it looked like The Gray Man would never hit the big screen, until Anthony and Joe Russo took over the project. Now that the film has successfully landed at Netflix – it’s been revealed that a sequel to The Gray Man as well as a spin-off are both in development.
As noted via Deadline, Netflix announced that Ryan Gosling will return to star in the sequel to The Gray Man. Furthermore, Anthony and Joe Russo will also both return to direct the film. The screenplay will be written by Stephen McFeely, as opposed to the first film, where he co-wrote the screenplay alongside Joe Russo and Christopher Markus.
In regards to the spin-off, details are scarce for this project. However, it was revealed that Deadpool franchise and Zombieland writers Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese will be tackling the screenplay for this particular film. While Joe Russo couldn’t comment much about the spin-off that will be “something a little more edgy and experimental,” he had this to say about the sequel:
“The sequel will be inspired by the Mark Greaney novel. Translating from one medium to another often requires interpretation, but we have an incredible amount of source material from an amazing offer. We’ll draw on that for the sequel.”
Anthony Russo and Joe Russo directed The Gray Man, one of the most expense Netflix films ever made, based on the 2009 novel of the same name by Mark Greaney. The screenplay for the film was written by Joe Russo, Christopher Markus, and Stephen McFeely.
The cast for the film includes Ryan Gosling, Chris Evans, Ana de Armas, Jessica Henwick, Regé-Jean Page, Wagner Moura, Julia Butters, Dhanush, Alfre Woodard, and Billy Bob Thornton.
The film was released digitally via Netflix on July 15, 2022. Fans can stay tuned to ScreenGeek for additional updates regarding The Gray Man, its newly-announced sequel, and its upcoming spin-off as we have them.
