Does anyone else need a cigarette after that fantastic season of The Boys? Yes, we’ve sadly already hit the end of the third season of the Amazon Prime series. Of course, the cast and crew will return for the fourth season – and you know that showrunner Eric Kripke already has something cooking. But until then – let’s dissect that last shot of this season.
SPOILERS FOR THE SEASON 3 FINALE OF THE BOYS
Homelander (Antony Starr) has been on this family-building journey for the latest season. The ultimate evil Superman hasn’t gotten everything he wanted. Power, control over Vought Industries, and for a brief time, a father. However, the one thing that always eluded him was raising his son, Ryan (Cameron Crovetti).
That finally changed when the young boy decided to stand by his father at the end of the climactic battle between The Boys, Maeve (Dominique McElligott), Soldier Boy (Jensen Ackles), and Homelander.
After that battle, Homelander flew down into a crowd with the boy in the final moments of the season.
Tired of being badgered and hounded by those not groveling at his feet, Homelander does what he does best and laser beams the problem away – right in front of Ryan. The smirk from the child sends a signal to the audience that it might only be bad news from anyone who stands against the two.
We were able to catch up with the actor behind Homelander, Antony Starr, to get his thoughts on whether having Ryan by his side might change the character for better or worse next season:
Well, I would’ve said for the better, except the very last thing we see is him zapping someone’s head and getting away with it. More than getting away with it; getting support, rewarded for it, getting praised for it. And then his son – the last thing we see is that little smirk the kid gives. So I don’t think it bodes well. If we get a Season Four, I guess we’ll get to dig into that but look – Jaws [Bruce the Shark] can’t turn into a friendly dolphin. Homelander can’t turn into a lovable good dad. So whatever happens, it’s gonna be f*cked up.
Homelander finally has everything he wants, but we all know that the only thing that men with power want is more power. Season Four has already been greenlit by Amazon, and everyone is waiting on bated breath to see what happens next.
