The Final Destination film franchise has been around for two decades now. The original movie was released as far back as 2000. And, with the new millennium, it helped usher in a new style of horror that’s been a part of every film in the series since. After five movies, and ten years since the fifth film was released, it looks like they’re looking to change things up. According to franchise creator Jeffrey Reddick, Final Destination 6 actually changes the long-running formula that’s been a part of all of the movies up until now.
While this might upset some fans, it’s certainly a breath of fresh air for others. It’s also reassuring that it’s the original creator saying this and not someone unattached to the classic films. After all of this time, and with so many films, it seems like a good thing to try something a little new for the sixth installment. Jeffrey Reddick explained as much while speaking with Dread Central via Fangoria.
Here’s what he had to say regarding Final Destination 6 and how the upcoming movie will change the franchise’s formula:
“I will say that it’s not just going to be another kind of ‘we set up a group of people, they cheat death, and then just death gets them.’ And there’s one wrinkle that we kind of added to every movie to kind of like change it up a little bit: this one is… a true Final Destination movie, but it doesn’t follow that kind of formula that we’ve kind of established.”
Furthermore, Jeffrey Reddick added the following statement with a laugh:
“I’m really excited with the story that I can’t tell you about,” he noted humorously.
Indeed, while all of the films in the series have followed the same formula, they all have their own unique qualities. For example, the last film in the franchise, Final Destination 5, ended up becoming a prequel by the end. Audiences were surprised to see our protagonists board the passenger flight from the opening of the original Final Destination. It was a nice bookend that helped bring the series full circle. Of course, that’s just another reason to try something even more different with the sixth installment. Hopefully we’ll have more details on that soon. As such, fans can stay tuned to ScreenGeek for any further updates on Final Destination 6 and other exciting horror films as we have them.
