The Disney Plus series Moon Knight finally introduced the titular character to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Many fans have waited a long time to see Moon Knight get an adaptation – much less one as successful as this Disney Plus series. And, while audiences wait to see what the future has in store, some might’ve questioned what became of Ethan Hawke’s character Arthur Harrow. The MCU villain appears to have died off-screen, and as such, some fans have speculated Arthur Harrow might still be alive. Now Moon Knight writer Jeremy Slater has confirmed his thoughts and intentions on the matter.
According to Jeremy Slater, who shared his thoughts with The Playlist, the character actually is dead. He also explained his train of thought when implementing the third personality, Jake Lockley, into the very end of the series.
“That’s the way I wrote it on the page. Again, because you don’t actually see a body, no one’s ever dead until you see the body. We had that teaser pretty early on in our story,” Slater said. “I didn’t want to introduce Jake until the very end because I knew that it was going to be hard enough to make the audience care about the relationship between Marc and Steven if it was just the two of them. And I knew that if you put three personalities in there, it would just become a mess and that it would be too hard for the audience to track.”
With that in mind, Jeremy Slater did suggest that the ending is somewhat open. As such, if the next writer chooses to do so, they could potentially find a way to bring back Ethan Hawke’s Arthur Harrow. But for the time being, and within the story that he wrote, the character is completely dead to Slater.
“So the goal from the very beginning was we’re going to save Jake for the teaser,” he continued. “He’s going to be the one who kills Harrow. But the fact that we don’t see a body, and I think the fact that everyone loved Ethan Hawke so much and had so much fun working with him on this project, I think they’re just kind of keeping a few cards in their deck just in case the circumstances are ever right. It could have been a flesh wound. It could have been a warning shot. I don’t know. In my mind, he’s dead. But again, the person who gets to answer that is whoever kind of tells the next Moon Knight story.”
As such, it seems fans should just assume that Ethan Hawke’s Moon Knight character Arthur Harrow is dead. But as the Marvel Cinematic Universe and many other franchises have proven before – there’s always the possibility for a comeback. So who knows? If the next writer feels more inclined than Jeremy Slater, then it’s very much a possibility that they’ll bring Arthur Harrow back. As such, fans will just have to stay tuned to ScreenGeek for any additional updates as we have them. It seems more than likely that we should have further news sooner or later – especially with as successful as the series has been on Disney Plus.
