Sony’s Marvel films have been quite divisively received by fans and critics. While films like their Venom franchise tend to do very well, other projects like Morbius have mostly failed. As such, it’s unclear how fans should feel about their upcoming projects like Kraven the Hunter. This upcoming film stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson as the titular character, and while that’s exciting, he also seems to have teased that there will be a major change in Kraven the Hunter.
He recently spoke in an interview with Variety, where he discussed his time making the movie. He described the character as “one of Marvel’s most iconic, notorious anti-heroes – Spider-Man’s number one rival.” He also noted that the character is “not an alien, or a weird,” which he found exciting. However, he did add the following which caught the eyes of many fans:
“He’s just a hunter, a human with conviction. An animal lover and a protector of the natural world. He’s a very, very cool character.”
It seems to be somewhat contradictory if the character is a hunter like in the comics, yet one that’s “an animal lover and a protector of the natural world.” It’s this latter statement that seems to indicate that the character will be much different from his comic book counterpart. Of course, it’s possible that this change for Kraven the Hunter won’t be as severe as Aaron Taylor-Johnson makes it sound.
As for one positive, he did note this exciting fact that should make the film stand out compared to most other Marvel projects:
“This one is shot entirely on location.”
Hopefully we’ll have more details soon. As such, fans can stay tuned to ScreenGeek for updates as we have them.
J.C. Chandor is directing the film from a screenplay by Art Marcum & Matt Holloway and Richard Wenk. The film will be produced by Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach.
Audiences will be able to see Kraven the Hunter when it hits theaters early next year, on January 13, 2023.
