The live-action series Squid Game became Netflix’s most popular show ever. Now it’s been revealed that Netflix is taking the next step – in addition to a second season of the series, the streaming platform has now greenlit a reality series based on Squid Game as well.
This information comes via Deadline, where they revealed that the new reality series will be titled Squid Game: The Challenge. Excitingly, it looks like it will be one of the biggest reality television shows ever.
As they explained:
“Netflix has ordered ten-part series Squid Game: The Challenge, which will see English-language speakers from around the world compete for a $4.56M cash prize – the largest cash prize for a reality series.”
Although they’re still casting the series, proving it to be in the early stages, we do have some details for how it will operate:
“The contestants will compete in a series of games inspired by the show plus some new ones and their strategies, alliances, and character will be put to the test while competitors are eliminated around them.”
Brandon Riegg, VP of Unscripted and Documentary Series at Netflix gave the following statement:
“Squid Game took the world by storm with Director Hwang’s captivating story and iconic imagery. We’re grateful for his support as we turn the fictional world into reality in this massive competition and social experiment,” he began. “Fans of the drama series are in for a fascinating and unpredictable journey as our 456 real world contestants navigate the biggest competition series ever, full of tension and twists, with the biggest ever cash prize at the end.”
This is certainly an exciting development for fans of the property. The first season of the Netflix series, which was released in September 2021, became such a global phenomenon that it makes sense Netflix would want to expand the brand. But while additional seasons and potential spin-offs were expected, a reality series is certainly a surprising step. Fans can stay tuned to ScreenGeek for more updates as we have them.
