Fans are excited to see the highly-anticipated sequel to the 2019 film Joker, which proved that there was still plenty of potential in the DC brand. Now we’ll be seeing this potential taken to the next level in Joker 2, because it’s just been revealed that a massive celebrity is in talks to join the film. As it turns out, Lady Gaga is in negotiations to star in the Joker sequel as Harley Quinn.
Although Margot Robbie has quite popularly portrayed Harley Quinn on the big screen, Todd Phillips’ Joker takes place in a completely separate continuity. This allows all sorts of new cast members to play familiar characters. As such, fans will be able to see a completely different take on Harley Quinn – this one which will potentially be played by none other than Lady Gaga. As noted via THR:
“If a deal makes, Gaga would play Quinn. However, this new Quinn exists in a different DC universe than the Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn, which most recently appeared in 2021’s The Suicide Squad as well as several other films.”
Interestingly, however, they also suggest the film will be a musical. This is certainly a surprise considering that the preceding film was not. But the first Joker film did take quite a few risks in portrayal its titular character. As such, it isn’t that surprising that Todd Phillips might want to try something new with this outing as well. With Harley Quinn involved, and portrayed by Lady Gaga, it certainly seems like a fitting reason to turn Joker 2 into a musical. As such, fans can stay tuned for updates as we have them.
The working title for the film featured on the front page of the script was “Joker: Folie à deux.” This title translates to “Madness for two,” which many fans suspected at the time meant Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker would be inflicted with split personality disorder or battle some kind of imposter. But now that it’s been reported Harley Quinn is involved with the film, the title suddenly makes so much more sense.
Todd Phillips is expected to direct the film, which he co-wrote the screenplay for alongside Scott Silver. Meanwhile, Joaquin Phoenix is also expected to return in the film as his fan-favorite portrayal of the iconic comic book villain.
