‘Morbius’ Theatrical Re-Release Flops At Box Office

It took several delays before Morbius was finally released in theaters. Unfortunately, for most fans, the vampire superhero film just was not worth the wait. While Sony did give themselves some newfound credit with their successful Venom films, it appears that their efforts to do the same for Morbius, the Living Vampire, were not as fruitful. In fact, the film was outright considered a flop after it hit theaters. Then, as the internet does with such things, social media users began making fun of the film. It was enough to convince Sony to re-release the film with the abrupt hype. Unfortunately, however, it appears that Morbius has simply flopped yet again.

The film was released back to theaters earlier this month. On its Friday, June 3 release, however, it only made $85,000. This is a small addition to its equally small grosses so far. At the domestic box office, Morbius has only earned $73.6 million. Meanwhile, worldwide, the film has only made $163.4 million. The numbers here are pretty sad no matter how you look at them. For example, movies released under the Marvel Cinematic Universe brand are often considered billion-dollar blockbusters. As for Sony, their Venom films haven’t been too far off. So for Morbius? It’s just lackluster.

With that said, it seems likely that Morbius will not be getting any kind of sequel for Sony. Especially now that their plans to have Morbius re-released in theaters have flopped. This was probably a last chance scenario for the studio and it just proved that there’s not enough interest. Of course, it’s still in the realm of possibility that Jared Leto’s character could show up in another Sony or Marvel project at some point in the future. Especially with another Venom film on the way, Kraven the Hunter, and even a Madame Web film. There are many places he could appear.

As such, fans ironic or not can stay tuned to ScreenGeek for more updates as we have them. If we’re lucky, Jared Leto will at the very least say the fake line that everyone’s been sharing online – “It’s Morbin’ Time!” which he’s already acknowledged.

Until then, Morbius is also currently available on digital platforms as well. Meanwhile, the film will be released on physical media formats DVD, Blu-ray, and 4K UHD on June 14.
