The lawsuit between Johnny Depp and his ex-wife Amber Heard recently came to a close. The jury finally released an official verdict on the matter, and as it turns out, the verdict was mostly in favor of Johnny Depp. While they decided Johnny Depp was defamed by Amber Heard, however, they also believed that he did the same to her albeit with less counts. Now Amber Heard has decided to appeal the verdict.
This might not be too surprising, especially given the statement that Amber Heard released on her Twitter account. She already expressed how disappointed she was with the jury’s decision. While Johnny Depp is obviously much happier with how things turned out, Amber Heard is not, and soon she’ll be filing for an appeal according to EW.
As they’ve stated:
“The Aquaman actress plans to appeal the verdict in her ex-husband’s defamation suit against her, EW has learned. The decision comes after a jury in Fairfax County, Va., found on Wednesday that she intentionally and maliciously defamed Depp when she wrote her 2018 op-ed in the Washington Post about her experiences as a domestic abuse survivor.”
They recalled that Johnny Depp was awarded the following amount due to the verdict:
“Depp was awarded $10 million in compensatory damages and $5 million in punitive damages, substantially less than the $50 million he asked for in his lawsuit. Judge Penney Azcarate reduced the punitive damages to Virginia’s statutory cap of $350,000.”
Amber Heard, on the other hand, was awarded much less for her countersuit:
“The jury found partly in Heard’s favor in regard to her defamation countersuit, awarding her $2 million in compensatory damages and no punitive damages.”
While many thought that the Depp vs Heard defamation trial would finally be over, it seems that it just won’t be that simple. Now that Amber Heard plans to appeal the verdict, there’s no telling what could happen next. As such, stay tuned to ScreenGeek for further updates as we have them.
