Many fans have been trying understand what Warner Bros’ direction for the DCEU is. It seems clear that while they’re continuing forward with certain characters and cast members, they’ve also been quickly replacing others. One such character being eyed for a replacement is none other than Superman. In fact, it was previously announced that J.J. Abrams was involved with a new take that would introduce a black version of Superman with writer Ta-Nehisi Coates. Now that Warner Bros has been merged with Discovery, however, it seems part of their new overhaul might be to have Henry Cavill return as Superman instead.
As noted via THR, it appears that there are issues with Warner Bros Discovery regarding the lack of any progress with J.J. Abrams’ DC projects. Although they have reportedly “seen scripts for Constantine and the pilot of Madame X,” it’s the other projects like the aforementioned Superman reboot that has Warner Bros Discovery anxious.
Here’s what they’ve stated:
“Sources say the DC Comics properties have also come under the spotlight. Sources suggest there is some frustration within the halls of Warner Bros. Discovery that Abrams has laid claim to a number of DC characters but has yet to get anything on the air.”
As a result, CosmicBook further iterated that the black Superman project could be refitted for Henry Cavill to return as Superman instead. They’ve reported this in the following statement:
“Ta-Nehisi Coates handed in a versionĀ of his and Abrams’ Superman movie which leaves the door open for Henry Cavill to return and star as Superman, which suggests the newly formed Warner Bros. Discovery merger and David Zaslav could be behind the changes, as Zaslav seems to be all about quality content, making money, and making fans happy, and it has been reported Zaslav believes that several top-shelf characters such as Superman have been left to languish andĀ need to be revitalized.”
The “overhaul” from Warner Bros Discovery goes even deeper, however. This information was only revealed because it was stated that the HBO series Demimonde is being potentially cancelled over budget concerns. This follows after rumors that J.J. Abrams’ Zatanna will face a similar fate, and with this Superman script now being potentially refitted for Henry Cavill, it’s clear that plenty of changes are coming. As such, it’ll be interesting to see what we learn in the coming months. Especially regarding other related projects that were filmed before the merger was fully completed like The Flash – which we revealed the plan was for Sasha Calle’s Supergirl to replace Cavill’s Superman in that movie. We’ll just have to wait and see what happens.
