Leslie Jones was one of the stars of the 2016 Ghostbusters remake, and now it looks like she’ll be starring in a gender-swapped animated series inspired by Plastic-Man. It’s worth mentioning that the DC Comics character was previously the subject of a female-led take announced in 2020. However, this new animated series is a completely separate project. Although it has yet to receive a title, the series is being developed at Warner Bros Animation.
This news comes from Variety, although it appears that the series is still in the very early stages of development. They were unable to share any plot details and it further appears that no writer or network has been attached. However, they did reveal that Leslie Jones will be an executive producer on the series in addition to voicing the gender-swapped version of Plastic Man. It appears that this new version of the character will simply be named Plastic.
The series will be aimed towards adults much like the previously-released DC animated series Harley Quinn. In that particular show, the titular Harley Quinn teams up with a group of supervillains to forge her own way to the top of Gotham. A spin-off of Harley Quinn was also recently announced, titles Noonan’s, which will focus on the DC character Kite Man.
As such, a series centered on a gender-swapped Plastic Man isn’t that surprising. Especially now that HBO Max has a race-swapped version of Velma Dinkley from Scooby-Doo getting her own adult animated series. It seems like Warner Bros has found a lot of potential in these types of properties for the time being.
Fans can stay tuned to ScreenGeek for additional updates on this unnamed animated series, which sees Leslie Jones voicing the Plastic-Man inspired character Plastic. In addition to this series, we should also have some exciting news on properties like Harley Quinn in the near future, especially considering that the third season is due to be released sometime this year on HBO Max. After the very successful first two seasons, it’s about time the character comes back for another round of mayhem.
