With Sam Raimi’s latest venture Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness now in theaters, it’s the perfect time to talk about his older works. While most fans gravitate towards The Evil Dead, there’s a large selection of fans hoping that Darkman will receive the reboot treatment. Now, Sam Raimi reveals, Universal has indeed shown interest in a new Darkman film.
While speaking with The Wrap, Sam Raimi has not only revealed that Universal has interest in a Darkman sequel, but that there’s even a producer attached. Of course, the director has been far too busy with working on projects like Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness to focus on Darkman. But it’s certainly an exciting possibility to hear about.
As he stated:
“Yes. Universal is talking about a ‘Darkman’ sequel. There’s a producer attached,” Raimi confirmed. “I haven’t heard the story yet or gone into it, I’ve been so busy with this movie. But I think it’s cool.”
Furthermore, Sam Raimi insisted he’d love to have Liam Neeson return for a sequel with Universal.
“I don’t know if he’d do it,” Raimi said. “But he’d be incredible.”
Interestingly, Liam Neeson recently discussed his own interest in a new Darkman project. While he didn’t guarantee that he’d appear in a new film, he did say he’d love to read a script. As noted in his interview with ComicBook:
“That’s a good question. I would be very interested in reading the script. Very.”
It seems like a new Darkman film could be a very real possibility if everything aligns just right. While it might seem unlikely, we are living in an age of both reboots and superheroes. Darkman, as such, would be the perfect candidate for another opportunity on the big screen. With Sam Raimi having helped revive the Evil Dead franchise multiple times over the years, including an upcoming reboot titled Evil Dead Rise, it would be nice to see him give his lesser known film the same treatment as well.
