One of the most iconic creature features of the 1980’s might finally be getting rebooted. Furthermore, the film’s original co-writer/producer Jefery Levy and co-writer/director Luca Bercovici are both involved. The duo have previously revealed their efforts to get a reboot of Ghoulies off the ground, citing that they had a “great concept” for the project. Now it appears their reboot of Ghoulies is “very very close” to happening.
Jefery Levy revealed the exciting news on Facebook, explaining that the rightsholders are interested. Naturally, however, they’d like to see support from the fans before going ahead with the project. Nevertheless, this is great news, and perhaps the biggest push towards seeing a new Ghoulies film since the 1990’s.
Here’s what Jefery Levy had to say:
“Ghoulies fans, we are getting very very close to the reboot. Lionsgate has reached out, and as much support as you can show (go to their facebook page and make a ruckus), please do it!”
As noted above, the Ghoulies film franchise has been dormant since 1994, when Ghoulies IV was released. Since then, however, the film franchise has maintained an incredible shelf life. With DVD and Blu-ray releases keeping the old films alive, new generations of Ghoulies fans have been clamoring for more. Even Trick or Treat Studios, for example, has released some incredible Ghoulies merchandise which includes life-sized monster replicas. With such a loyal fanbase, it’s clear that a fifth Ghoulies film would immediately find an audience.
Now that Jefery Levy has revealed a reboot of Ghoulies is so close to happening, it’s up to fans to make their voices heard. Lionsgate is available to reach on most social media platforms, so if you’d love to see a new Ghoulies film, you know where to make your request heard. With the original creative team involved, now is the perfect time for a Ghoulies reboot.
