Actor Johnny Depp has been in the midst of various legal entanglements with his ex-wife, actress Amber Heard. The issues began after the two divorced, and since then, each individual has accused the other of being a physical abuser. Johnny Depp has since lost his role in the Fantastic Beasts film franchise, and he also lost his role as Jack Sparrow in the Pirates of the Caribbean film franchise. Now Johnny Depp has stated that even if Disney offered him a chance to return as Jack Sparrow – he would reject it.
As noted via Variety, Amber Heard’s attorney, Ben Rottenborn, asked Johnny Depp if there was no way at all that Disney could get him to return as Jack Sparrow:
“The fact is, Mr. Depp, if Disney came to you with $300 million and a million alpacas, nothing on this earth would get you to go back and work with Disney on a ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ film? Correct?”
Depp answered:
“That is true, Mr. Rottenborn.”
Johnny Depp previously cited that Disney removed him from the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise after Amber Heard’s op-ed was published. He insisted that she defamed him in her writing. Amber Heard’s attorney, however, was trying to insist that Disney already wanted to remove Johnny Depp from the role before Heard wrote her op-ed. He noted that there was a Daily Mail article from 2018 that mentioned Depp was “out as Jack Sparrow.” However, Johnny Depp said he “wasn’t aware of that.”
He insisted that “Disney was trying to cut ties to be safe,” and that they “didn’t want there to be something trailing behind [Depp] that they’d find.” Specifically, he noted how they continued to use his character at their theme parks despite removing Depp from the iconic role.
As such, it’ll be interesting to see which direction this lawsuit takes going forward. And no matter what, it looks like fans will never again get to see Johnny Depp play Jack Sparrow.
