Now that Discovery has successfully merged with WarnerMedia following a $43 billion deal, Warner Bros. Discovery is now looking at an overhaul of DC Entertainment. It’s clear that DC Entertainment is currently split off into all sorts of directions, with various continuities being distributed across both theatrical releases and streaming projects. With this potential overhaul, WB Discovery could streamline all of these different efforts “to maximize the value of the superhero stable.”
This report comes from Variety, where they explained that this decision comes from CEO David Zaslav himself. Here’s what they had to say on the matter:
“David Zaslav, the CEO of the combined companies, and top leadership have been toying with the idea of turning DC into its own solidified content vertical, the sources said.”
They further explained how this move would change DC Entertainment:
“The move would potentially affect DC feature film development in the Warner Bros. Pictures Group, streaming series at Warner Bros. Television, and the creative arm within DC proper — all in an effort to have the disparate elements more closely aligned in order to maximize the value of the superhero stable — one often seen as punching up against Marvel.”
One method of doing this, they explain, is to put someone in charge of DC Entertainment similar to the way Kevin Feige is involved with Marvel Studios. Interestingly, however, it appears David Zaslav doesn’t want someone to take a creative position. Rather, he wants someone that can coalesce all of these different properties from a business point-of-view.
“One insider suggested that Zaslav was less interested in finding a creative guru and more eager to hire someone who had the type of business background needed to keep all the different factions at DC working more harmoniously.”
Ultimately, it appears that Warner Bros. Discovery hopes to achieve a better “coherent creative and brand strategy” with this overhaul. As such, it’ll be interesting to see what impact this overhaul has on the DC brand in the coming future.
