The first official trailer for Ms. Marvel has been released, and thus so has backlash from the fan community. This time, fans are upset over a major change for the upcoming Disney Plus series – in particular, it appears that Kamala Khan’s superpowers have been changed. The comic book version of Ms. Marvel has the ability to stretch her limbs elastically, not unlike the Fantastic Four’s Mr. Fantastic. With the Disney Plus series, however, it appears that the character has been granted more Green Lantern-esque abilities. Now Ms. Marvel creates cosmic variations of her limbs as opposed to stretching them for her superpowers.
The Marvel Cinematic Universe quite often makes deviations from the comic books, many of which are used to make their characters more acceptable for a live-action format. It also seems likely that they didn’t want to have Ms. Marvel seem too similar to Mr. Fantastic. In any case, at a time when the MCU has been mostly becoming more and more comic book accurate, it seems this was a move that’s considered too jarring for fans.
As you can see below, the backlash over Ms. Marvel and her new superpowers is all over Twitter:
I’m not even Ms. Marvel’s biggest shooter. I’m like a very casual fan of hers. So the fact that even I still feel a weight of disappointment on my chest over her powers is probably very telling.

the ms marvel show could’ve been so good if they kept her ACTUAL POWERS pic.twitter.com/GEHOEC8asG

I’m disappointed they changed Kamala’s powers for the show.
There’s more to Ms Marvel than powers, but they play a big role in her growth. Hopefully, Kamala’s relationship to her culture, faith & family will remain intact because it’s the specificity of her story that’s special.

Once again. Kamala’s powers are integral to her character arc of embracing her ethnicity and culture, stripping those away erases a big part of her character. #MsMarvel

So I’ve watched the #MsMarvel trailer and imo it’s alright I like it, BUT I understand why the other people hate it. Her having captain marvel powers is sooo weird

I urge all of you to read these runs. The MCU is not going to and will not do her or her comics justice. Kamala being the Green Lantern of Marvel is not her character whatsoever and deciding to change her powers was a grave mistake. Read about the real #MsMarvel! https://t.co/yfmOwQEcps

I don’t know how I feel about Kamala’s change of powers and origin story. Her origin is so unique and add so much to her. It’s one of the most important elements of her character arc btw. #MsMarvel 👑 pic.twitter.com/4tGzXinZBF

It’ll be interesting to see what stance Marvel takes on the matter, if any at all. It seems unlikely there’s anything that can be done, considering the series is already shot and ready to premiere this summer. Fans will also be getting to see Kamala Khan return in the upcoming film The Marvels, so as this rate, fans might as well get used to Ms. Marvel and her new superpowers as they appear in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Of course, the backlash may just get worse. We’ll have to wait and see what happens.
The MCU series Ms. Marvel will debut on the Disney Plus streaming service on June 8, 2022.
