Fans of the 2007 film I Am Legend will be happy to hear that a new sequel is currently in development. Furthermore, it’s been announced that original star Will Smith is set to reprise his role as Robert Neville – and he’ll be joined by actor Michael B. Jordan in the process. The film will mark the first collaboration between the two major Hollywood players, and they’re both attached as producers as well. The 2007 I Am Legend film was based on the 1954 novel of the same name by author Richard Matheson.
This news was shared by Deadline, and comes not long after it was revealed Warner Bros had something in the works regarding the IP. While it wasn’t clear if their unannounced project had any relation to the 2007 film, it’s now confirmed that it will be a direct sequel.
As they’ve revealed:
“Warner Bros. is upping the stakes on its I Am Legend franchise to a stratospheric level. For its next chapter, the studio is bringing back not only original star Will Smith but also Black Panther actor Michael B. Jordan in what will rep the duo’s first big movie together as stars and producers.”
It’s unclear what plot details for the film are at this time. However, it’s been stated that the 2007 film’s writer, Akiva Goldsman, is also returning to write this next entry. He’ll also serve as a producer alongside Will Smith and Michael B. Jordan.
While these three are attached to produce the film, with Akiva Goldsman writing the screenplay, it appears that a director has not yet been attached. The film is still in the early stages of its development, but this is still exciting news for fans who’ve been waiting for a follow-up. Francis Lawrence was the one who directed the 2007 film for Warner Bros.
While the film is still in early development, Will Smith did offer the following tease regarding his involvement on Instagram:
