There have been a variety of attempts to get a sequel to Beetlejuice off the ground. For whatever reason, the film just never found the momentum to keep going forward. But now it appears that Beetlejuice 2 could finally be happening, with both Michael Keaton and Winona Ryder reprising their iconic roles.
While the project has yet to go in front of “WB’s greenlight committee,” it appears that Bradd Pitt’s production company Plan B is spearheading the project. Unfortunately, there aren’t any other plot, character, or crew details about the project beyond this. But they do believe that if all goes as planned, then the film could begin production as quickly as this year.
As revealed by ComicBook via The Ankler:
“Plan B Entertainment, inc. — the award-winning production company associated with actor Brad Pitt — is lined up to produce Beetlejuice 2. Both Michael Keaton and Winona Ryder are expected to reprise their roles as Beetlejuice and Lydia Deetz, respectively. The project could reportedly film as early as summer 2022.”
At this rate, it seems more likely than ever that we’ll finally be getting Beetlejuice 2. And with Michael Keaton and Winona Ryder both potentially returning for the project, this could be the incarnation of Beetlejuice 2 that fans have been hoping for the most over the decades. If production really could begin as soon as this summer, then we’ll probably have much more news in the coming months. As such, fans can stay tuned to ScreenGeek for updates as we have them.
Tim Burton’s Beetlejuice was released in 1988 and became both a critical and commercial success. The film was followed by an animated series in 1989 which lasted four seasons. Aside from other side-projects like video games and more recently a stage musical, the property has been quiet on the film side of things. Although a variety of writers, including Seth Grahame-Smith, have been attached to write Beetlejuice 2 – the project has just never gotten off the ground. Hopefully with this news, however, that will soon change.
