While fans are excited for The Batman, the latest stand-alone take on the iconic comic book character, some are also looking forward to the future. As always, these types of films are usually intended to launch a string of new sequels and stories. Now director Matt Reeves has confirmed the talks have started for a sequel to The Batman, which will once again see Robert Pattinson as the titular character.
He revealed as much while speaking with The Independent during the red carpet premiere of The Batman. He explained that while he’d love to do a sequel, the first film is also intended to stand on its own.
Here’s how he began:
“I hope so, we’ll see — I mean for sure! I mean look, you don’t make number one as if there’s going to be number two. You have to make number one as if you’re swinging for the fences and it has to be a movie that stands and lives on its own.”
He continued by revealing that talks, however, have indeed started regarding The Batman 2:
“But I really believe in what we’ve done and I’d be excited to tell more stories. We are already telling other stories in the streaming space, we’re doing stuff on HBO Max, we’re doing a Penguin show with Colin which is gonna be super cool, and we’re doing some work on some other stuff too. But we have started talking about another movie, but, y’know, right now we’ll just put it out in the world and I’ll try to enjoy this.”
Meanwhile, fans will still be able to look forward to The Batman which hits theaters this March. The film was directed by Matt Reeves from a screenplay he wrote with Peter Craig.
The Batman stars Robert Pattinson and Zoe Kravitz, with the villains including Paul Dano as The Riddler, Colin Farrell as The Penguin, and John Turturro as Carmine Falcone. The film also includes Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth, Jeffrey Wright as Jim Gordon, Peter Sarsgaard as Gil Colson, and Jamie Lawson as Bella Real.
Audiences will be able to finally see The Batman when it hits theaters on March 4, 2022.
