Although video game adaptations have traditionally been less than well-received, those times have certainly changed in recent years. Especially when it comes to Netflix, where their adaptations of properties like The Witcher have been quite positively welcomed by the video game community. Now it looks like the Netflix streaming platform will be tackling a film adaptation of the 2007 video game Bioshock.
This is exciting news for fans of the highly-acclaimed video game and its various sequels. The franchise has become one of the most popular video game properties of all time, and a film adaptation has been requested by many. While it’s unclear what direction it will go in, Netflix certainly seems like the right place for this Bioshock film.
As revealed via THR:
“Video game franchise BioShock is getting another shot at a film adaptation, this time via Netflix.
The streaming giant has partnered with Take-Two Interactive, the game’s parent company, to develop a potential cinematic universe. Vertigo Entertainment and Take-Two will serve as producers.”
Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like they’ve gotten very far into the film’s development at this point. As they’ve noted:
“No writer or filmmaker is on board at this time. The partnership deal has been in the works for almost a year.”
With the aforementioned reference that the film could “develop a potential cinematic universe,” it’s also worth noting that we could expect much more than one film adaptation. With the video game having spawned several sequels, all of which contain hours and hours of gameplay and lore, it makes sense that they would consider making a multitude of films to accommodate that. As such, fans can stay tuned to ScreenGeek for updates on this Bioshock film project as we have them. It certainly sounds as though we’re entering a golden age for video game adaptations, so fans should keep their eyes out for more info soon.
