The Star Wars franchise has been expanding in some interesting directions, many of which are focusing on specific characters. With shows like The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett, and the upcoming Obi-Wan Kenobi series, fans are anxious to know who could be next. As it turns out, a new rumor suggests that none other than Darth Maul, who was first introduced in The Phantom Menace, could be getting his own spin-off series.
This information comes via GFR, where it’s been insisted that Lucasfilm and Disney are indeed developing a Darth Maul series for Disney Plus. While this should be taken with a grain of salt, it isn’t exactly outside the realm of possibility. In fact, Darth Maul more recently appeared in the live-action film Solo: A Star Wars Story. As such, it’s clear that Disney has plans for the character – and a new television series could be just the way to do him justice.
Darth Maul has certainly had an interesting history within the Star Wars universe. As mentioned above, he was first introduced in The Phantom Menace as a mostly silent villain, someone that would be “killed” in battle by Obi-Wan Kenobi. But in the animated series Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Darth Maul was not only revealed to have survived, but he was gifted new robotic legs after being cut in half. Eventually, the character managed to survive past the events of Revenge of the Sith and lead his very own crime syndicate, Crimson Dawn, which was shown in the aforementioned Solo: A Star Wars Story.
With so much history and lore surrounding the character, and tons of pieces we know nothing about, there’s no shortage of possibilities for a Darth Maul series. While the character was seemingly killed off during the events of Star Wars: Rebels, there are still plenty of decades to explore otherwise. Especially when Solo: A Star Wars Story seemed to imply that Darth Maul would be playing a larger role in that time period, it would be a great opportunity to show off what he and his crime syndicate are capable of.
In the meantime, there still are plenty of other Star Wars shows to be excited for. Aside from the ones mentioned above, we also have Ahsoka and Andor just to name two other shows on the way. With so many different characters getting the spotlight, it’s probably only a matter of time before Darth Maul makes yet another triumphant return.
