After decades of development, a Blade Runner sequel was finally released in 2017 titled Blade Runner 2049. It became unclear what would become of the sci-fi franchise after that film’s release, but now there’s a new live-action series in development. The new series, which is titled Blade Runner 2099, will follow the events of both films. It’s also been revealed that original Blade Runner director Ridley Scott will be attached as an executive producer.
As further revealed via Deadline, the series is currently in development at Amazon Studios. Furthermore, it’s been revealed that Silka Luisa will be writing and executive producing the series. Amazon Studios and Alcon Entertainment are working in association with Scott Free Productions for the project. They’ve also suggested that Ridley Scott could even become involved as a potential director.
Here’s what they said:
“The project, which would mark the first Blade Runner live-action series, is in priority development at Amazon Studios, which is fast tracking scripts and eyeing potential production dates. Staffing is currently underway for writers to join a room. Scott may direct if the series moves forward, sources said.”
Unfortunately, there aren’t any other details available about the Amazon show’s plot. Aside from the Blade Runner 2099 title, that is, which reveals the series will take place 50 years after the events of Blade Runner 2049. It’s worth noting that Blade Runner 2049 also took place 30 years after the original Blade Runner.
It’s worth noting that this isn’t the first television series set within the Blade Runner franchise. There was recently an anime series produced by Adult Swim and Crunchyroll under the title Blade Runner: Black Lotus which takes place in 2032. As such, it’s going to be truly interesting seeing where this franchise continues to move next. It’s clear that the creative entities involve are eager to work through both the past and present of the Blade Runner franchise, so hopefully we’ll have more updates soon.
