The newly released MCU film Spider-Man: No Way Home featured a wide variety of characters from different Spider-Man continuities. As it turns out, however, there were actually even more characters planned to appear. Specifically, it looks like fans almost got to see Mysterio and Rhino appear in Spider-Man: No Way Home.
This is somewhat shocking, considering how many villains are already in the film. With Green Goblin, Doctor Octopus, Electro, Sandman, and The Lizard, it’s hard to imagine how even more villains like Mysterio and Rhino could’ve been introduced in No Way Home. But according to writers Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers, they almost managed it. They revealed as much while speaking with The Q&A With Jeff Goldsmith.
Here’s what was said:
“Yes, there was [talk of Mysterio or Rhino returns], “Yeah, there was definitely talk, like, ‘Who is the Sinister Six here?’”
“If you want six, you can always say Venom was the sixth [member] if you want. He’s in the tag, he made it [into the MCU], but he never made it out of Mexico [Laughs]. There was always that talk of, ‘Should we be doing officially the Six?’ I think what’s so fun about working off the [comic book] canon is you can reinvent, and we know that people know the canon, but maybe everything doesn’t line up…was Venom the sixth, or was there someone else lurking?”
“Who were some of those shapes in the sky that’s coming through?”
This is both an exciting and surprising revelation. It also means that there are no restrictions to what could happen in the future. It means that we could expect to see the Sinister Six with a more conventional lineup, or something completely off-the-rails. And with the Multiverse in full effect, things can no doubt get very off-the-rails. So hopefully we’ll have an idea of where Spider-Man lore is headed within the MCU sooner rather than later.
The Marvel Cinematic Universe film Spider-Man: No Way Home is currently still playing in theaters.
