The Goosebumps franchise has been having a renaissance since at least 2015, when Rob Letterman directed a brand-new movie based on the popular brand. Now a few years after the release of its first sequel, it appears a new Goosebumps television series is being put into development. What’s more, Rob Letterman will return to direct the first episode. He’ll also be attached as a writer and executive producer. The new Goosebumps series will consist of ten episodes that will be made available on the Disney Plus streaming service.
As revealed by Variety, the new series seems to adhere to the ongoing narrative style of the films instead of the anthology formula seen in the 1990’s series. They even provided a short synopsis regarding the setup for the new show.
Here’s what was described:
“The series follows a group of five high schoolers who unleash supernatural forces upon their town and must all work together – thanks to and in spite of their friendships, rivalries, and pasts with each other – in order to save it, learning much about their own parents’ teenage secrets in the process.”
Along with Rob Letterman, it’s been revealed that Nick Stoller is also attached to write for and executive produce the live-action series. Meanwhile, “Neal H. Moritz and Pavun Shetty of Original Film, Conor Welch of Stoller Global Solutions, and Iole Lucchese and Caitlin Friedman of Scholastic Entertainment are also executive producing. Sony Pictures Television Studios will produce.”
It’s certainly great news for fans that were hoping to see the Goosebumps brand revived for the small screen. While it does change the formula from how the original show operated, the similarly-designed films have been rather successful financially. It’s also worth noting that ahead of Goosebumps, Disney Plus has already seen success with another R.L. Stine project, the series Just Beyond. Netflix also had success with their three Fear Street films which were released last year. Overall, it looks like a great time to be a R.L. Stine fan.
