One of the biggest genres at the moment is none other than the superhero genre, which has spawned many fan-favorite adaptations from both Marvel and DC. Both brands have been producing content at full-speed lately, and it seems like every character both popular and obscure is getting their own franchise – or close to it. As such, many fans have suspected whether or not Joker would be getting the sequel treatment. The 2019 film, based on the supervillain of the same name, starred Joaquin Phoenix in the title role. While it did incredibly well with critics, fans, and at the box office – it seemed unclear if a sequel was ever really in the cards. But now it’s being reported that the currently untitled Joker 2 will go into production next year.
This news comes via Heroic Hollywood, where they claimed that development on the sequel is moving ahead. And while things are slowly moving on schedule, with a 2023 production date in mind, there just aren’t many other Joker sequel details at the moment.
As they noted:
“According to an insider with knowledge on the Joker sequel, Warner Bros. has officially received the first draft of its script and the film will begin shooting sometime in 2023. Plot details are being kept in a cell at Arkham Asylum.”
Unfortunately, this is all we have to go on for now. However, they did suggest that star Joaquin Phoenix and director Todd Phillips would both be involved with the sequel. This should be reassuring for fans that aren’t sure if a sequel is the best route for Joker. Either way, it looks like the Clown Prince of Crime is coming back for another round at the box office. As such, fans can stay tuned to ScreenGeek for updates on Joker 2 as we have them.
In the meantime, there are still plenty of other Batman projects to look forward to. This includes The Batman, which is scheduled to be released in theaters March 4, 2022.
