With a career in filmmaking that spans decades, George A. Romero certainly left his mark on the entertainment industry. He especially left his mark on the horror genre in particular. He directed such classics as Night of the Living Dead, Dawn of the Dead, and Creepshow to name but a few. One of his lesser appreciated films is the 1973 horror film The Crazies, which was eventually remade in 2010 during the remake craze. This film has gone on to be similarly underappreciated, considering how many bad remakes from the same time period have become infamous. It seems that some horror fans have rediscovered the film, however, as the remake of The Crazies is becoming quite popular on Netflix.
As revealed via FlixPatrol, it appears that The Crazies is racing to the top of Netflix and its massive streaming platform. In fact, as of this writing, it’s made it to Netflix’s global most-watched list. What’s more, the film appeared to have even broke into the top ten for several different countries. It seems like fans really are starting to rediscover this 2010 film. Perhaps we’ll continue to see the film reach new records on Netflix, especially if it receives positive word-of-mouth.
Of course, the film has almost always been well-reviewed. Many critic websites have given positive reviews for the film, noting that it’s a remake that stands up to and in some cases even surpasses the original. Perhaps this positive reception could be compared to Tom Savini’s 1990 remake of Night of the Living Dead, which some fans consider superior to the 1968 original. Likewise, Zack Snyder’s 2004 remake of Dawn of the Dead has also been quite commonly received with positive feedback.
Unfortunately, there are still plenty of remakes based on George Romero’s works that have failed to please fans or critics. But considering that The Crazies is an exception, then it’s all the more reason to celebrate the film. Perhaps by giving the film a watch on Netflix is indeed the perfect way to celebrate its newfound shelf life.
Breck Eisner directed the 2010 film which starred Timothy Olyphant, Radha Mitchell, Joe Anderson, and Danielle Panabaker.
