With a new adaptation of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs on the way from Disney, it looks like the House of Mouse is now facing backlash for the decision. In particular, actor Peter Dinklage has put Disney openly on blast for remaking Snow White. While Disney has rather successfully recreated a variety of their animated properties for live-action, such as Aladdin and Mulan, it seems Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs still “makes no sense” to Peter Dinklage.
In particular, he pointed out to Marc Maron’s WTF podcast the irony that Disney wants to make a film regarding dwarfs living in a cave, yet cast a Latina star as if it were a progressive project. And, frankly, it’s hard to argue with that point assuming that’s still the direction the filmmakers intend to take.
As stated by Peter Dinklage:
“I was a little taken aback when they were very proud to cast a Latina actress as Snow White. You’re still telling the story of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Take a step back and look at what you’re doing there. It makes no sense to me… You’re progressive in one way and you’re still making that f–king backwards story about seven dwarfs living in a cave together, what the f–k are you doing man? Have I done nothing to advance the cause from my soapbox? I guess I’m not loud enough.”
Meanwhile, Disney gave the following response via THR:
“To avoid reinforcing stereotypes from the original animated film, we are taking a different approach with these seven characters and have been consulting with members of the dwarfism community. We look forward to sharing more as the film heads into production after a lengthy development period,” a Disney spokesperson said.
Marc Webb will direct the film from a screenplay written by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul. Marc Platt will produce the film.
The cast stars Rachel Zegler as the titular Snow White. Actor Andrew Burnap has also joined the project as an unknown character, while Gal Gadot plays the film’s Evil Queen.
The live-action adaptation of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs does not currently have a release date.
