After last year’s release of Mortal Kombat turned out quite successful for the Warner Bros film, it’s finally been confirmed that Mortal Kombat 2 has been greenlit. While it was always expected that Mortal Kombat was intended to launch a new film franchise, there was never any official confirmation that anything was officially in the works. Now this changes, as not only has the film been greenlit, but it’s been announced that Moon Knight writer Jeremy Slater is attached to write the screenplay.
This information comes via Deadline, where the scoop that Jeremy Slater was hired to write the Mortal Kombat sequel was first announced. Unfortunately, there isn’t much more information available at this time other than New Line Cinema hiring Slater for the project.
As they noted:
“New Line is getting back into a fighting stance on a sequel to Mortal Kombat, the action-adventure film based on the blockbuster video game franchise. The studio has hired Jeremy Slater to write Mortal Kombat 2.”
Despite a lack of plot details, however, this is still great news. It shows that Warner Bros and New Line Cinema are now fully committed to producing Mortal Kombat 2. After many fans were expecting the first film to lead into a variety of other franchise stories, it’s safe to say that’s now still the plan. There’s certainly a lot of potential with this new world they’ve created, so hopefully the production on the sequel continues steadily. As such, fans can expect updates on the sequel on ScreenGeek as we have them. With the writer of Moon Knight attached to the project, it’ll be interesting to see how it differs from last year’s film.
Last year’s Mortal Kombat video game adaptation featured a cast that included Lewis Tan, Jessica McNamee, Josh Lawson, Joe Taslim, Mehcad Brooks, Ludi Lin, Tadanobu Asano and Chin Han.
