It looks like things just aren’t going well for The Matrix Resurrections, the latest sequel to The Matrix. The film is in the midst of being boycotted by Chinese nationalists. What’s more, it looks like star Keanu Reeves is at the center of all the backlash. The John Wick actor was recently announced to be in the line-up for the Tibet House U.S. Benefit Concert that’ll be held on March 3, 2022.
As revealed by Taiwan’s Central News Agency, via MovieWeb, it seems that some people are upset that Tibet is currently under the control of the People’s Republic of China. As such, this Tibet House U.S. Benefit Concert has a wide number of Chinese nationalists very upset.
They further noted:
“Reeves is one of the artists listed to take part in the concert in some way. However, it is unclear exactly how The Matrix and John Wick movie series star will be involved, on a roster that also includes Iggy Pop, Jason Isbell and Patti Smith, among others.”
What’s more, they explained that this could lead to a variety of boycotts for U.S. movies being released in China. For example, while The Matrix Resurrections is currently being called to be boycotted in the country, it seems like they could extend this boycott to other future Keanu Reeves films as well. This could very well include the upcoming film John Wick 4. This also isn’t the first boycott of this caliber, as the country has previously called for boycotts of Marvel films like Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings as well as Eternals.
With all that said, it seems that this backlash against Keanu Reeves is only the latest strike against The Matrix Resurrections. The film has not been doing well at the box office, or with critics and fans, so it isn’t a great sign for the franchise. Especially since the film was intended to revive it for a new series of sequels. Keanu Reeves, on the other hand, will more than likely bounce back despite the backlash. Especially with so many other projects in the works and on the way.
