When it comes to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, there is no film with more questions than Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. After the unexpected and tragic passing of Chadwick Boseman, many have wondered just how the franchise will honor the actor as well as proceed with the Black Panther mantle. On top of that, rumors have circulated in mass quantities that this film will introduce one of Marvel’s oldest characters into the mix: Namor the Sub-Mariner. This also would mean that a whole new section of the MCU would be explored: the underwater world of Atlantis. Now, a new rumor suggests that Namor is more than an antagonist, he is setting up a future franchise.
Bleeding Cool (via The Direct) is reporting that they have heard some interesting news about Namor. Of course, take this with a massive grain of salt for now, as this is only a rumor at the moment. The website states that Namor’s appearance will be akin to that of Black Panther’s in Captain America: Civil War: a cameo like appearance before getting his own film.
In other words, this appearance in the sequel will set up Namor for his own film series or possibly a Disney Plus series that will explore the character further as as well as cement their legacy in the MCU. This should also bring focus upon not only Namor, but his cousin Namora and the Atlantean Warlord, Attuma.
There are a lot of question marks here, however. Rumors have stated that the distribution rights to both Namor and the Hulk have returned to Marvel from Universal. If this Namor franchise rumor is true, it would in turn confirm the rumor about the rights of the characters coming home to Marvel.
Kevin Feige has stated recently that the Namor rights situation is not as clean and clear as people would like to believe, and there is nothing as far as a Namor movie or series currently on Marvel’s future slate, so for now we have to take all of this in stride until something official comes from Marvel Studios.
