Meat Loaf, the rock star whose Bat Out of Hell album became one of the best-selling albums ever, has sadly passed away at the age of 74, according to a recent post on his verified Facebook page. A cause of death for the iconic artist was not revealed.
Born Marvin Lee Aday, Meat Loaf was the son of Orvis (a former police officer) and Wilma (a school teacher). He was given the nickname “Meat” by his father, who described him as being “born bright red” and looking like “nine-and-a-half pounds of ground chuck”
In addition to being a popular singer, Meat Loaf also had some very memorable film performances over the years – appearing in movies such as The Rocky Picture Horror Show, Fight Club and Tenacious D in The Pick of Destiny. He also had success on Broadway as well.
The statement from Meat Loaf’s Facebook reads:
Our hearts are broken to announce that the incomparable Meat Loaf passed away tonight surrounded by his wife Deborah, daughters Pearl and Amanda and close friends.
His amazing career spanned 6 decades that saw him sell over 100 Million albums worldwide and star in over 65 movies, including “Fight Club”, “Focus”, “Rocky Horror Picture Show” and “Wayne’s World.”
“Bat Out of Hell” remains one of the top 10 selling albums of all time.
We know how much he meant to so many of you and we truly appreciate all of the love and support as we move through this time of grief in losing such an inspiring artist and beautiful man.
We thank you for your understanding of our need for privacy at this time.
