Although it took some time to get going, the MonsterVerse seems to have finally found its footing. After Godzilla vs Kong became one of the first big theatrical hits to be released post-pandemic, the franchise quickly came roaring back to life. Now there are a variety of plans being made to further expand the film series. As it turns out, this now includes bringing the monsters to live-action television! Indeed, a MonsterVerse series that will feature Godzilla has now been announced for Apple TV Plus.
This news, via Deadline, is massive for fans of the franchise. While it’s been expected that Adam Wingard would be returning at some point to direct another film, and it was previously announced that an anime series was also in development, this is a huge moment for the series. What’s more, a brief plot synopsis was also released.
Here’s the synopsis:
“Following the thunderous battle between Godzilla and the Titans that leveled San Francisco and the shocking new reality that monsters are real, the untitled series explores one family’s journey to uncover its buried secrets and a legacy linking them to the secret organization known as Monarch.”
While there isn’t much information given, it certainly sounds faithful to the films that have been released so far. It’ll be interesting to see how it translates to a television format.
Legendary Television will produce the series, which will be executive produced by showrunner Chris Black and co-creator Matt Fraction, alongside Safehouse Pictures’ Joby Harold and Tory Tunnell and Toho Co. Ltd. Hiro Matsuoka and Takemasa Arita will executive produce for Toho.
With the MonsterVerse franchise quickly expanding following the release of Godzilla vs Kong, fans can hopefully expect more news on this series and several other projects in the near future. As such, fans can stay tuned to ScreenGeek for updates on these various MonsterVerse projects as we have them. It’s definitely a good time to be a Kaiju fan.
