It looks like HBO Max is becoming quite the place for horror film reboots. While it was already revealed that Evil Dead Rise, the next installment in the Evil Dead film franchise, was headed to the streaming platform – another franchise reboot can now be expected as well. Specifically, it’s just been revealed that a reboot of Final Destination is now going to be produced for HBO Max. What’s more, Spider-Man: No Way Home director Jon Watts has been attached to this new film as a producer!
This news comes via Variety, where it was revealed that Jon Watts delivered a treatment for the new film. Lori Evans Taylor and Guy Busick will be writing the screenplay based on Watts’ treatment. Jon Watts will be joined by his wife and partner, Dianne McGunigle, as a fellow producer, as well as franchise producers Craig Perry and Sheila Hanahan Taylor.
According to a statement made by Jon Watts:
“Both Dianne and I have been massive fans of ‘Final Destination’ from the very beginning,” Watts stated. “So to be able to have a hand in crafting a new story with the original team and New Line is going to be both fun and exciting.”
Producer Craig Perry also added the following statement:
“Jon and Dianne’s passion for the series is only matched by how much fun they are to work with,” Perry said. “Sheila and I couldn’t be more excited to have their creative energy driving this latest installment in the ‘Final Destination’ franchise with New Line. With Guy and Lori’s inspired execution of Jon’s original idea, we have a movie that audiences are gonna love.”
Fans have been clamoring for a new Final Destination film for quite some time, and HBO Max sounds like the perfect place for the franchise to make a comeback. While Jon Watts won’t be directing this installment, it’s certainly interesting to hear how involved he’s been with the creative process. Hopefully we’ll have more news on the project soon. As such, fans can stay tuned to ScreenGeek for updates as we have them.
