With the upcoming film Batgirl now in production, there are a multitude of reasons to be excited. One such reason is that Michael Keaton will be joining the film’s cast, once again playing Batman. Michael Keaton initially played the character for the movie Batman in 1989, as well as its 1992 sequel Batman Returns. He later took a hiatus from the role, soon to return in this year’s film The Flash. Now that we know he’ll also be joining Batgirl, it appears that there will be some references made to a Robin as well.
This was revealed in some newly released set photos from the production of Batgirl that’s going on in Glasgow, Scotland. It seems that a mural of Batman was being placed by set dressers, and while it clearly depicts Michael Keaton’s take on the character, there was another surprise as well. The mural clearly shows that some version of Robin also exists – as the character is depicted right next to Batman.

This is certainly an interesting development, and it shows just how much more scope the film will have than just focusing on its titular character. Of course, it’s unclear if Robin will be appearing in Batgirl aside from what’s depicted in the mural. It’s also unclear if things could have since changed, with Robin either having died or become Nightwing at this point. We’ll likely just have to wait and see. If anything is for sure, though, they’re certainly making up for lost time with Michael Keaton’s Batman between The Flash and this outing.
The upcoming Batgirl film will be co-directed by Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah. The film was written by Christina Hodson.
Leslie Grace will star in the film as the titular Batgirl aka Barbara Gordon. J.K. Simmons will reprise his role as Commissioner Gordon from the DCEU. Actor Brendan Fraser has been cast as the supervillain Firefly. The aforementioned Michael Keaton will also play a role in the film, reprising his role as Batman. Jacob Scipio is also in the cast as a currently unconfirmed character.
The upcoming film is scheduled to be released sometime in 2022 on HBO Max.
