After attempts at a remake previously went nowhere, it’s been revealed that The Raid is once again being targeted for an American remake. In fact, it’s been revealed that this new take on The Raid will be made for streaming platform Netflix – with Michael Bay attached as a producer. What’s more, original The Raid director Gareth Evans is attached to the project as an executive producer.
This news was revealed via Deadline, where they noted that Patrick Hughes will direct the project. What’s more, Patrick Hughes co-wrote the script with James Beaufort.
As further noted via Deadline, the producers gave the following statement:
“We’re incredibly excited about Patrick’s unique vision for this film. It’s a distinctly original take on the material, which promises to pay great respect to the original film while also bringing a fresh approach and perspective that will set its own course in the action genre,” the producers said.
As for those unfamiliar with the property, Deadline summed up the growing franchise’s history:
“The original film was written and directed by Evans and followed an elite Indonesian S.W.A.T. team that becomes trapped in a tenement run by a ruthless mobster and his army of killers and thugs. The film premiered at the 2012 Toronto Film Festival and earned instant praise for its insane action sequences and turned Evans into one of the festival’s biggest stars. Sony Pictures Classics would release the film, which gained a cult fan base that would lead to a sequel The Raid 2.”
It’s definitely interesting that the property is back on track to being rebooted. There was a previous attempt that was retooled after the rights to The Raid were apparently lost. But now over a decade after the original film was released, it seems like Netflix will be the ones to reinvent the brand and give The Raid an American twist.
