There’s a lot to process for those that have seen Spider-Man: No Way Home. The new MCU film packs quite a punch, especially with the vast amount of characters involved. With so many heroes and villains from past Spider-Man franchises, it might be hard to keep track of the core story at hand. For example, one of the biggest emotional moments in No Way Home occurs after Peter Parker’s own Aunt May suffers her death at the hands of the Green Goblin.
It’s a tragic scene, and one which really amplifies Peter Parker’s emotions towards the Green Goblin. It also gives Aunt May an even bigger role in pushing the MCU’s Spider-Man forward. She gives Peter Parker a final piece of advice before she dies. Specifically, she states the iconic line:
“With great power, comes great responsibility.”
It’s a massive moment, and now in an interview with Marvel.com, actor Tom Holland has been able to open up about it.
“The relationship between Peter and May throughout these films has been really integral to the heart and soul of the story,” Holland said. “This scene kind of seemingly comes out of the blue, like no one expects this to happen. It’s going to be really, really hard hitting for people [seeing the] movie.”
His comments were expanded on by co-star Zendaya:
“[May’s] a great role model. She’s raised a lovely young man, and she’s done it on her own,” Zendaya said. “She doesn’t get the credit she deserves.”
She added, “It’s important to acknowledge May in the respect that everybody is like, ‘Oh, he always has to have a mentor,’ All these father figures and all this stuff. But May has raised him. Shoutout to May!”
The death of Aunt May is definitely a major moment in both Spider-Man: No Way Home and the franchise in general. It brings things full circle while also projecting the series forward. With a film full of different villains and superheroes, it’s nice to see that the proper dramatic arcs were left intact.
The Marvel Cinematic Universe film Spider-Man: No Way Home is currently playing in theaters.
