The original Ghostbusters continuity was revived this year with the release of Ghostbusters: Afterlife. As one can imagine, Sony will thus be releasing a new Ghostbusters Ultimate Collection box set featuring Afterlife alongside the original two films. The box set does not include the 2016 Ghostbusters film, however, which acted as a sort of remake to the original film. This has been a divisive matter, as the film has always been divisive among fans. While those who prefer the original continuity tend to hate the remake, others have found their love of the franchise through it. As such, there are plenty of fans disappointed that the 2016 film was excluded from the box set. And this includes the 2016 Ghostbusters film’s own director, Paul Feig.
It’s clear that he isn’t afraid to reach out to Sony over the matter, and attempted to do so over social media. The director specifically called out Sony for excluding his Ghostbusters film, with Paul Feig attempting to explain why it belongs in the set. Especially because it includes appearances from the original cast members.
Here’s the tweet made by Paul Feig below:
“Um … @SonyPictures , I know this must be a mistake,” he wrote. “We do have a lot of fans and Bill, Dan and Ernie were in it and it won the Kids Choice Award for Best Feature Film the year it came out. So, I guess this was just an oversight? #weareallghostbusters”

Following the callout, Sony has agreed to include the movie as a digital download.
The 2016 Ghostbusters film has been in an interesting spot ever since it was released. For decades before the film was ever made, fans had been clamoring for a second official Ghostbusters sequel. As such, the remake was met with a lot of backlash. After the film didn’t do as well financially as Sony hoped, the franchise was rebooted with the original continuity in mind. Fans finally got their second sequel in the form of Ghostbusters: Afterlife, which has done much better critically. It seems that the decision for the 2016 Ghostbusters film to exclude the original films’ storyline has now forced it to be excluded in return.
