Actor Tom Holland has been playing the live-action version of Spider-Man for a number of years now. While the actor has become one of the most iconic interpretations of the character, especially for having done so within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it’s clear that the future for the character could go virtually anywhere. Tom Holland has acknowledged this in past interviews, and more recently spoke out against the press for having misconstrued one of these recent statements.
As he explained in an interview with Extra, Tom Holland has become very frustrated with those of the press who change the context of his statements.
Holland said:
“This is just a perfect example of how, like, everything you say is always misconstrued and no one actually speaks the truth. I don’t know what the future of Spider-Man looks like. I don’t know whether I’m going to be a part of it. Spider-Man will always live on in me, and I know that Amy and the studio are keen to figure out what the next chapter of Spider-Man looks like.”
“If that happens to be with me, then that’s very exciting; but if it’s time for me to walk away, then I’ll do so proudly. What I was referring to in that interview where I said ‘If I was playing Spider-Man when I’m 30 I’ve done something wrong,’ it’s because I would be taking up an opportunity for someone to come in and change what being Spider-Man means. Spider-Man could be more diverse; it could be a female character – it could be anything. So that’s what I was saying – and thanks to that journalist for changing that, I really appreciate it.”
While the actor is beloved by fans for playing the character, much like Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield before him, it’s clear that there will eventually be another Spider-Man. While he might be seen as an iconic take on the character, and many fans love to see him embrace that, it’s nice to know Tom Holland is open for more diversity in the role as well. Hopefully the press will be more considerate of his statements like that in the future.
The upcoming MCU film was directed by Jon Watts from a script by Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers.
Tom Holland, Zendaya, Marisa Tomei, Benedict Cumberbatch, Jamie Foxx, Alfred Molina, Jacob Batalon, Tony Revolori, and Hannibal Buress are all attached to appear.
Spider-Man: No Way Home is currently scheduled to hit theaters on December 17, 2021.
