Although the film caught audiences by surprises, it looks like we could still get a sequel to James Wan’s Malignant. The movie premiered in both theaters and on HBO Max earlier this year, and horror fans went absolutely crazy. The film was designed as a love letter to various horror subgenres, all of which were known for being shocking or weird. Malignant took this into its very own DNA, creating a modern horror villain known as Gabriel. And, in true horror tradition, it looks like Gabriel might be returning. Indeed, it appears that there are “conversations happening” for a potential Malignant 2.
While speaking with ScreenRant, actress Annabelle Wallis who plays Madison Mitchell noted there are “plenty of ideas swirling around.” This is definitely good news for fans of the film.
Here’s what she fully had to say about the potential of a Malignant sequel:
“There’s plenty of ideas swirling around. We were very, very flattered by the reception and I think taken aback by the reception. So yeah, there’s lots of conversations happening.”
It’s certainly great to hear that reception for the film has been so positive, and that the cast and crew behind the film are aware of this. While the movie wasn’t quite the box office success that James Wan’s other horror franchise starters were – Saw, Insidious, and The Conjuring to name a few – there’s definitely just as much potential to see the body horror story continued. As such, let’s hope that these conversations keep moving forward and something serious begins to take shape.
Until then, fans can stay tuned to ScreenGeek for updates on any potential Malignant sequel as we have them. It definitely looks like we could be getting more of Gabriel sooner or later.
James Wan’s Malignant is currently available on both Blu-ray and DVD, as well as digital platforms.
