The WarnerMedia streaming service HBO Max has been quite successful since its initial launch, and part of this is because of its selection of DC-related content. Unfortunately, for fans of Birds of Prey, they might want to stick with their home video release to enjoy the full movie. As it turns out, fans have spotted that the version of the DCEU movie currently streaming on HBO Max is actually censored. As of this time, however, there’s been no reason given for the film’s censorship.
Fans that click on Birds of Prey will notice right away that the film has been altered. This is because the film will immediately open with a graphic that states Birds of Prey “has been modified as follows from its original version,” specifying that the film has been edited for content. In particular, it looks like everything that grants the film its R-rating has been removed entirely.
As those who are familiar with the film know, there are quite a few curse words and even visual gags that contribute to its MPAA rating. All of these elements have been trimmed or altered for the version streaming on HBO Max. So it is going to be a rather different viewing experience if you’re more familiar with the original theatrical cut.

What’s even more confusing is that HBO Max claims in the description that it’s rated R. But with CBR noting that this is the same edit as the TV version that’s been airing recently, it could very well be a mix up of sorts. Because Warner Bros and HBO Max have yet to make any comments, it’s unknown if these changes are intentional or not.
There could be any number of reasons for HBO Max releasing the censored version of Birds of Prey to their platform. With reports of other such movies being censored, it’s possible that it was intentional. Hopefully someone involved is able to clarify the situation. Until then, fans should be aware that if they choose to watch Birds of Prey on HBO Max – they’ll be watching a censored cut.
