Over the years, Sony has made various attempts to expand their Spider-Man films into their own cinematic universes. The first major attempt occurred when they created The Amazing Spider-Man and its sequel, which would have led into a Sinister Six movie. Of course, things didn’t go as planned, and the property was ultimately rebooted as part of the MCU with Spider-Man: Homecoming. With this change, however, Sony still managed to create a Venom solo movie, which has already received its own sequel. They’ve further pushed the limits by creating a Morbius film which is expected to be released early next year. And, on top of working on other such solo films, Sony is now reportedly developing two more movies based on Spider-Man villains.
As fans know, Sony has been slowly developing a Kraven the Hunter film to come into fruition following the release of Morbius. But now we know their potential plans past Kraven the Hunter as well. In fact, according to insider Daniel Richtman, we might very well get to see Sony develop Sandman and Rhino solo movies as well.
As noted by Richtman:
“Sony developing Sandman and Rhino solo films”
Unfortunately, there weren’t any other details given beyond that. So for the time being, it’s unclear what exactly a Sandman or Rhino film could consist of. But at this time, it’s become perfectly clear that Sony really wants to focus their efforts on creating movies about Spider-Man villains while the titular superhero gets further involved with the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Although, with the way the multiverse has been getting used lately, especially with the upcoming film Spider-Man: No Way Home, it seems possible that all of these efforts could come together all the same. We’ll just have to wait and see.
Until then, fans will be able to see Spider-Man: No Way Home in theaters on December 17, 2021.
