Long before the Marvel Cinematic Universe made the idea of connecting movie franchises together into one overarching story a mainstream occurrence, fans have secretly pondered for decades over whether their favorite film connects to another classic. People watch these flicks over and over again, spotting new details each time, finding Easter Eggs they never realized before, and formulating theories as to how Movie A connects to Movie B. Now, there is a new theory out there, this time in the horror genre, that connects three iconic franchises together into one shared universe – Psycho, Halloween and Silence of the Lambs!
James Rolfe, better known as the Angry Video Game Nerd, brought up his new theory on his Cinemassacre Podcast. He postulates that the legendary horror films all are in the same cinematic world. The theory states that the character Sam Loomis in Alfred Hitchcock’s classic Psycho is the same Sam Loomis from the Halloween franchise. Now, will this seems far fetched at first, and the timing is a little off, it makes some sense when you explore it further.
After the scarring and trauma inducing events at the Bates Motel, Loomis left America to study psychology abroad at Oxford University. Trying to bury the past a bit, Loomis threw himself into his studies on psychopaths as well as the British culture, even adopting a British accent (this part helps account for the huge accent difference between characters). And, whilst at Oxford, he made friends with a colleague in a similar field – Dr. Hannibal Lector! This brings three huge names in the horror movie genre together into one solidified universe!
Rolfe does admit that this is out there at best, but the more one thinks about it, it could be true. True enough that the right creator could make this a reality (so long as all the studios involved with the rights to each character can find a way to work together). I for one would love to see a film about Loomis journey from the Bates Motel to Oxford to Michael Myers.
