With the recent release of Dune, the highly-anticipated adaptation of Frank Herbert’s classic sci-fi novel, fans have been worried about whether or not there’d be a sequel. After all, this first movie was designed as the first half of a two-part adaptation. But luckily it looks like things are going to be in favor of the fans. It’s just been announced that Dune: Part Two is officially happening.
As revealed in an announcement via Legendary, director Denis Villenueve will be allowed to complete his vision. When you consider that the second film of this two-part adaptation wasn’t always guaranteed, and that there were plenty of risks, this is a pretty massive announcement. And it goes to show how successful the first film must be for the studios involved to make this decision.
Legendary wrote the following on their Twitter page regarding the announcement:
“This is only the beginning… Thank you to those who have experienced @dunemovie so far, and those who are going in the days and weeks ahead. We’re excited to continue the journey!”

With the way the first film was created, it ended on something of an opening ending. As such, Dune: Part Two should be an exciting continuation of what the first film established. It’ll also be interesting to see how Denis Villenueve will tackle the other elements of the book that he restrained from introducing in the first film. There’s a lot of potential in the world of Dune, so hopefully we’ll learn more about this sequel in the coming years.
Denis Villenueve directed the latest Dune from a screenplay he wrote with Jon Spaihts and Eric Roth. The story was based on Frank Herbert’s novel of the same name. This newly greenlit second film will adapt the second portion of the iconic book. The first Dune film is currently available to watch in both theaters and on the HBO Max streaming platform.
The new film will be released two years from now, on October 20, 2023.
