With the DCEU busily expanding in a number of directions, it’s exciting to see that the long-anticipated Batgirl movie is still on the way. What’s more, the film which is set to be the first DCEU film released exclusively on HBO Max, has also acquired a rather incredible actor to play its lead villain. Brendan Fraser, known for his performances in films like The Mummy and more recently the DC series Doom Patrol, will be playing the character Firefly in Batgirl.
If an alleged casting call is to be believed, via Bounding Into Comics, this take on Firefly will be both unique and exciting for fans of DC. This version of the Firefly villain will be close to 60, which matches Brendan Fraser’s age, and turns out to be a disgruntled firefighter who wants to get revenge on Gotham. Hopefully we’ll get to learn more about this take on the character and how Brendan Fraser will be playing them as production on the film continues.
The Batgirl movie has had quite a bumpy production history, with filmmaker Joss Whedon at one point attached to direct. Obviously his version never took flight, and with the DCEU consistently changing as needed, it seemed unclear when Batgirl would be getting off the ground. But it seems like everything has finally come into place, and with Brendan Fraser attached to play the film’s lead villain – Batgirl is looking to be quite the movie.
The upcoming Batgirl film will be co-directed by Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah. The film was written by Christina Hodson.
Leslie Grace will star in the film as the titular Batgirl aka Barbara Gordon. J.K. Simmons will reprise his role as Commissioner Gordon from the DCEU. Jacob Scipio is also in the cast as a currently unconfirmed character.
The upcoming film is scheduled to be released sometime in 2022 on HBO Max.
