Halloween Kills was released over the weekend and judging by the film’s box office numbers – a lot of people went and saw it. It’s also worth pointing out that that’s not even factoring in all of the people that streamed it on Peacock. So with all of the attention on the movie, there was bound to be some controversy. While the reviews have been mixed to negative so far, the film is actually receiving some criticism in an area you might not expect. Some are saying that Michael Myers is homophobic in the movie.
Obviously, if you haven’t seen the movie, there are spoilers ahead. The scene in question is when Michael Myers breaks into his childhood home where a gay couple currently lives. Myers murders them – in one of the least surprising moments in the movie (he’d kill anyone regardless of sexual orientation, especially someone living in his home).
The scene has stirred up quite the discussion on social media, as you can see below.
Saw that new Halloween movie, didn’t expect Michael Myers to be so homophobic, based ngl

Spoilers for HALLOWEEN KILLS
Not looking forward to the earnest, unironic thinkpiece where someone says Michael Myers was homophobic for killing a gay couple, and that him hating gay people is worse than his serial killing.
— Jeff Burnett (@burnettski92) October 17, 2021
Well this shows you that Michael Myers is not homophobic as he kills anyone no matter their age, race and even sexuality. Please don’t hate me this just a joke.

No way mfs calling Michael Myers homophobic for doing to a gay couple what he does to everyone
— Howtfyouthiccwnoass (@smoovenorris) October 18, 2021
It’s not the first time a horror character has been called homophobic. Back in 2019, some were saying the same things about Pennywise the Clown after watching IT: Chapter 2. That was particularly interesting because prior to that, Pennywise had been called an LGBTQ icon along with The Babadook.
The sequel also received some other “backlash” as someone made a petition that said the filmmakers needed to remove the scene in which Michael Myers kills firefighters in brutal fashion. Obviously, the petition didn’t achieve its goal, as the scene is still in the movie.
At the end of the day, all of this leads us to one final question. Is Halloween Kills really that controversial in comparison to the other movies that we’ve seen the iconic slasher in (since the late 70’s) because of a scene in which he murders people? People that happen to be living in his childhood home when he comes back? There’s not really much to suggest that Myers wouldn’t do something like that – regardless of sexual preference.
It’s also fair to point out that some of the reactions seem to be tongue-in-cheek – as most Michael Myers and Halloween fans likely already know that the iconic character would kill anyone.
